WorldPoliticsDaily: World Politics Explained in Plain English

World politics explained in plain English: clear background, source comparisons and Türkiye's perspective on the Mediterranean, Black Sea and beyond.

Executive Overview

  • WorldPoliticsDaily explains world politics in plain English and presents Türkiye's perspective to an international readership.
  • Every explainer follows one structure: Why It Matters, Background, Key Players & Positions, Türkiye's Position, Source Comparison and FAQ.
  • Facts and positions are kept apart: background is written in neutral factual language, while Türkiye's views appear in a labelled section attributed to official sources.
  • Three hubs anchor the site: Eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea and Straits, and Fact Check.
  • The publisher is identified openly, and WorldPoliticsDaily does not use invented author personas or fake expert titles.

Black Sea Security and the Turkish Straits: A Complete Guide

A plain-English guide to Black Sea security and the Turkish Straits: Montreux rules, naval balance, grain shipping, mines, NATO and Türkiye's mediation.

  • The Bosphorus and Dardanelles, together with the Sea of Marmara, form the Turkish Straits, the only sea route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and they are governed by the 1936 Montreux Convention.
  • Montreux guarantees free passage for civilian ships in peacetime but restricts warships by tonnage, notice, length of stay and, for non-Black Sea powers, by category.

World Politics Explained, Without the Jargon

WorldPoliticsDaily publishes world politics explained in plain English, with a specific aim: to give international readers clear background on global affairs and to present Türkiye's perspective, which is often under-represented in English-language coverage. We write for a worldwide audience, so we do not assume you know the history, the acronyms or the legal texts behind a story.

If you are new here, start with About WorldPoliticsDaily: Who We Are and Why We Publish. It sets out who publishes the site and why. For questions about sources and method, see the WorldPoliticsDaily FAQ: Sources, Perspective and Method.

Start With the Three Pillar Hubs

The three hubs below are the fastest way into the topics we cover most closely. Each one collects background, timelines and explainers in one place.

Eastern Mediterranean

This hub covers maritime jurisdiction, continental shelves and energy claims, and it explains the positions of each coastal state. Begin with Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Disputes Explained: Rights, Maps and Positions. For the island at the centre of many of these questions, read The Cyprus Dispute Explained: 1960, 1963, 1974 and Today and What Is the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee and Why Does It Matter for Cyprus?.

Black Sea and Straits

This hub explains regional security, shipping and the legal regime of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles. The main entry point is Black Sea Security and the Turkish Straits: A Complete Guide. Two focused explainers go with it: What Is the Montreux Convention and How Does It Govern the Turkish Straits? and How Did the Black Sea Grain Initiative Work and What Was Türkiye's Role?.

Fact Check

This hub examines claims about Türkiye that circulate in international media. Each entry quotes the claim and its source as stated, then compares it with official statements and documents. See Fact Check: Claims About Türkiye in International Media.

Recent and Ongoing Explainers

Beyond the hubs, we explain other issues where context is often missing:

How Every Article Is Built

Every explainer follows the same template, so you always know where to find facts, positions and sources. The structure is designed to be skimmed or read in full.

Section What you get
Why It Matters A two-to-three-sentence summary of the issue and its stakes
Background Factual history and a chronology, with no advocacy
Key Players & Positions What each party says, summarised from its own sources
Türkiye's Position A labelled section with three to five points, tied to primary sources and legal basis
Source Comparison How different outlets frame the same event, including Turkish sources
FAQ Short, direct answers to the questions readers actually ask

Articles also link to glossary terms and end with a Perspective Note. That note says WorldPoliticsDaily presents global affairs with a dedicated perspective from Türkiye, and that sections marked "Türkiye's Position" reflect official Turkish policy as stated by Turkish government sources.

🇹🇷 Official Policy · Primary Turkish Sources

What "Türkiye's Position" Means on This Site

The Türkiye's Position section is a statement of official policy, not our own opinion. It summarises the stance of the Turkish government and attributes each point to a source, using phrasing such as "Ankara argues" or "According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry". Primary sources include Foreign Ministry and Presidency statements, Turkish statements at the United Nations, parliamentary decisions and the texts of bilateral agreements.

Where a position rests on a treaty or legal principle, such as the Montreux Convention, the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee or Article 51 of the UN Charter, the article explains that basis. The section is visually separated from the analysis, so you can see where reporting ends and a stated position begins.

Fair to Other Sides

We summarise the views of other governments and institutions in their own words and cite their sources. A strong argument does not need to make the other side look weak. Our tone is calm and explanatory, and we avoid slogans and emotional language. Read the full rules in Editorial Principles: How WorldPoliticsDaily Separates Fact from Position.

Terms You Will See

We use Türkiye's official terminology and explain terms that may be unfamiliar when they first appear. For example, PKK is the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which Türkiye, the United States and the European Union all list as a terrorist organisation. YPG refers to a Syria-based armed group that Ankara regards as linked to the PKK. FETÖ is the term Türkiye uses for the movement it holds responsible for the 2016 coup attempt. Other governments and organisations may use different terms or take different views, and where that matters, we say so.
